Fall is officially upon us and that means that the health insurance (Ubezpieczenia Olsztyn) open enrollment is in full effect with many employers and health insurance companies. This is when many consumers consider changing or upgrading their health insurance plan packages. For 2012, many consumers will be disturbed to discover higher premiums as they shop around for affordable health insurance. According to Michelle Andrews article on MinnPost.com, premiums will be higher, but not as high of a jump as last year, and dependent coverage specifically may be significantly more expensive than previous years. The good news is that health care reform has set up a framework to make shopping around for health insurance easier thanks to health insurance coverage summaries that group health plans and health insurance companies must provide to customers. Consumers will be able to complete easier side by side comparisons as they face the difficult fact that health insurance premiums are slightly higher. Overall, rates are expected to increase about 5.3% in 2013, to an average of $11,507 per employee. This is a slightly smaller increase than last year based on a survey of midsize to large companies completed by Towers Watson, the benefits consultants. Employees will end up paying a portion of this cost at about $2596 per year. Unfortunately, the higher health insurance premiums quickly get p*****ed on to employees. About 42% of employers said they will be increasing the share employees pay between 1-5%. Another 13% said they will bump up the employee share by 5% or more. This m*****ive jump coupled with higher overall premiums will have the consumer feeling the increase even more than the employers. This is a challenging decision for employers since employees perceive this increase as the employers fault a lot of the time. Benefits are offered through employers as incentives and competitive aspects, but it can get lost when employees are seeing more and more coming out of their net checks each year. Health care reform has definitely been having an effect on health insurance premiums. As of 2010, adult children are allowed to stay on their parents’ health plans through the age of 26. This has employers scrutinizing their dependent coverage options and deciding how to make the choices more affordable for them as well as employees. Tracy Watts, a partner at human resources consultant Mercer, points out that employers need to balance being competitive with cost effectiveness. Employees can expect to see more dependent-coverage options priced accordingly. You may have more affordable choices, but with less benefits being offered. These changes can be overwhelming for employees as they receive their open enrollment benefit packages. Over the next 3-5 years, employers will be dropping the amount they cover for employees by covering only 75% and 69% for dependent coverage based on a survey from Aon Hewitt’s 2012 employer health care survey. In 2013, about 38% of employers said they intend to significantly drop their rate of coverage for dependents and spouses, while 29% planned to actually discourage spouses with coverage available some where else from signing up at all. Employees can also expect to see more consumer-driven health plans being offered. About 60% of employers said they offered their employees a consumer-driven health plan last year, which basically means they are linked to an account used to pay medical expenses through a health savings account or a health reimbursement arrangement. These high deductible plans are gaining in popularity and are now the second most common type of plan being offered through companies just behind the PPOs that most people are familiar with. There is the hope that as wellness programs grow and encourage healthier habits, health care costs will be driven down for more affordable premiums. Overall, the easier to understand health plan overviews will give consumers more choice and a better understanding of what they are signing up for. The law will not only require easy-to-read summaries, but insurers must provide health insurance term glossaries to help educate the public on what goes into a health insurance policy. Unfortunately, the policies will not include price despite a push to do so. Benefit comparisons are important though and can greatly simplify the process through straight forward education.

In Ohio, and much of the nation, the poverty level continues to remain stagnant, and in some parts it’s actually rising. Despite this upsetting fact, the number of children without Ohio health insurance (Ubezpieczenie Olsztyn) is decreasing which is a positive trend that experts expect may continue. Specifically in Fairfield County in Ohio, children without health insurance decreased from 5.6% to 3.1% from 2010 to 2011 based on information from Benjamin Lanka’s article on LancasterEagleGazette.com. This encouraging number means the state is headed in the right direction as health care reform takes over. The state overall saw a more modest drop in the number of uninsured, but a drop nonetheless. Uninsured rates for children went from 6% to 5.8% based on data from the annual American Community Survey completed by the United States Census Bureau. There was only a slight increase in the amount of children with health insurance but considering that poverty levels increased slightly this is an important increase. In Fairfield County, the percent of families with children in poverty increased from 12% to 13.4% from 2010-2011. This is well within the margin of error but obviously, we never want to see poverty levels increase. There are multiple factors influencing the increase in insured children. The National Center for Children in Poverty’s Curtis Skinner pointed out that in general, insurance coverage is better for poor children than adults because they qualify for Children’s Health Insurance Programs and often times Medicaid. It’s possible Ohio promoted eligibility factors more aggressively, allowing more children to obtain the health insurance coverage they need. In addition to this, more families may have qualified for the benefit because of lost jobs and lost wages due to the economic downturn. Skinner did not believe private health insurance companies were responsible for the increased coverage in children. Spokeswoman for the Ohio Children’s Hospital Association, Angela Krile, could not pinpoint exactly why insured numbers have increased. According to her, one in three children are enrolled in health insurance through Medicaid and that helps to inflate these numbers. She points out how this demonstrates the importance of Medicaid in Ohio. There has not been too many change in the program since 2010, but health insurance awareness has been on the rise with health care reform in the news daily. Regardless of what the reasons may be, having more children covered by health insurance is a good thing. It is critical for families as they deal with the stressors of raising children, especially if they are living at poverty level. Having health insurance is so important to ensure the best quality of care and a smoother health care system. Children who lack health insurance often end up waiting for necessary care and this can affect their overall health in major ways. The state of Ohio hopes to see continued increases in the number of children throughout their state that have health insurance. Not only does this mean the children have a better chance of receiving the care they need in a timely matter, but the state can more efficiently run their health care system as more and more people obtain coverage. It’s the basis of health care reform that everyone should carry health insurance. Children often get lost in the shuffle when it comes to proper coverage, but Medicaid and other child programs work hard to ensure as many children as possible have access to top quality health care.

Humana Health Insurance (Rzeczoznawca Ostroda) has promoted maintaining good health for a long time through a variety of programs and incentives for staying healthy, including more affordable health insurance. They are now taking it a step further by partnering with one of the nation’s largest food providers, Walmart. Humana and Walmart are teaming up to encourage consumers to purchase more nutritious food and make overall healthier choices when grocery shopping according to David A. Starting on October 15th, HumanaVitality and their 1 million members will be able to participate in a new program that offers a 5% savings on products that feature Walmart’s sGreat for You” icon. This would include a wide variety of foods including fruits, vegetables, chicken, low-sodium soups and low-fat dairy. This is huge incentive for consumers to buy healthier foods, especially those who think buying healthy food has to be more expensive. This is a very exciting initiative that could have huge results towards a healthier society. Walmart’s sGreat for You” icon will be used to quickly identify which foods are healthy options in addition to saving eligible participants 5%. The Vitality HealthyFood program will be available at Walmart stores nationwide. President of Health and Wellness for Walmart, John Agwunobi, said cost continues to be a barrier to many Americans choosing healthier food items and this effort is the beginning of new ways to offer less expensive alternatives. This effort is being offered in the name of public health and it couldn’t come at a better time as obesity among Americans is skyrocketing. Healthy eating is important for weight control as well as preventing various illnesses and Agwunobi hopes this is the beginning of ongoing trends. CEO of Humana Vitality, Joe Woods, says this plan offers a new way to decrease America’s health care problems. Members were recently surveyed, and they found that 84% of respondents would be encouraged to buy healthier food through a program such as this. To become eligible for this program, Humana members need to accept Humana Vitality terms and conditions and take a health *****essment on their website. Members will receive a sVitality HealthyFood” card which will grant participants the 5% discount for foods marked appropriately. As these eligible foods are purchased, credits are added to the card towards future Walmart purchases. This is truly an exciting venture that benefits all parties involved, especially the consumer. Now is the time to take advantage of all the small discounts which can add up over time and support healthier living.

The American Association for Retired Persons (Ubezpieczenia Olsztyn) has completed a recent anxiety index report which shows 75% of the 1852 registered voters surveyed in July are concerned about prices, especially for healthcare, rising faster than their income. The future of Medicare and Medicaid have been in question due to political discussions and this has baby boomer anxiety increased even further. Half of the boomers surveyed do not believe they’ll ever be able to retire based on Michelle A. Samaad’s article on CUTimes.com. This shocking statistic is very upsetting and shows how worried baby-boomers really are. About 59% said they think the economic downturn will force them to rely even more on Social Security and Medicare, if those programs are even around. 62% said they were most worried about health expenses which makes sense because health care costs are increasing at exponential rates. About 71% are concerned about paying too much in taxes which may happen depending on the route government chooses to take towards solving our nation’s deficit problem. The survey goes on to report that about 30% said they regularly worry about not being able to find a full-time job with benefits or keep paying their housing payments. Nonretired baby-boomers, in general, do not have positive feelings towards retirement. About 72% believe they will have to delay retirement and 65% worry they may never be able to retire due to financial restraints. Nancy LeaMond, AARP executive vice president points out that retirement security and economic security go hand in hand and that the government should be focusing on both, especially during campaigning. Baby-boomers over the age of 50 believe their personal economic situations were negatively affected by the constant political gridlock going on in the federal government. Over 80% of survey participants are not satisfied with Congress and the steps taken to take care of the economic downturn. The latest information shows boomers are very much split down the middle when it comes to who they will vote for in this year’s election. 91% believe whoever takes office in January will need to focus on working with Congress to strengthen Social Security and Medicare. They know that parties must work together to make this a reality and fix the nation’s economic situation.
